Internet Entrepreneur: Common Characteristics of an Entrepreneur that Spell Success
Are there characteristics of an Internet entrepreneur you need to embody in order to be successful? While there isn’t a definitive list of common character traits for entrepreneurs, there is some agreement about what successful entrepreneurs have in common.
After digging through academic papers and articles, I have been able to uncover what some have identified as the important requirements for an entrepreneur. For fun, I put these traits and abilities into a job description. Of course we know that these folks don’t have job descriptions . . . they write their own. But if they did, it would look something like this
Entrepreneur WantedAbility to create a business from nothing. Strong need to achieve. Action oriented. Willing to work long hours and to take reasonable risks. Can form a plan and stick with it. Good at managing time. Can delay gratification until business becomes self-sustaining. Self-confident, determined and positive in the face of challenges. Perseveres. Adaptable, good problem solver, independent, with a strong sense of responsibility. Willing to learn, and seeks help when needed. Good salesperson..
From this job description, it’s easy to infer some of the main characteristics you will need if you want to be successful. And if you add “has a good support system and a mentor” to the mix. . . Well then! You have the icing on the cake! Have you ever noticed how most successful entrepreneurs talk of the need for a mentor and a support system? So if you're a girl, make sure you have some girlfriends. And if you're a guy, get a wife! (Just kidding . . . but you get the picture.)
On top of these usual characteristics of an Internet entrepreneur, it is also helpful if you had a self-employed parent as a role model. This is because your parent probably demonstrated the characteristics of an entrepreneur – showing leadership by inspiring and encouraging you. And they often passed on knowledge that can contribute to your success.
Finally, and most fascinating, according to a study done in 2006 by several scholars, including Scott Shane of Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead School of Management, much of entrepreneurial drive is genetic.
While no one has uncovered the absolute characteristics of an entrepreneur, taking an assessment can increase your awareness of your strengths and weaknesses. It will help you focus on the things you are good at, and seek support in areas where you are not as strong.
Rest assured that if you have many of the characteristics of an Internet entrepreneur, you are made of the “right stuff!” You have the traits you will need to create a successful business.
Finally, since being decisive is among the characteristics of Internet entrepreneur, it helps to know your value system. That’s because the decisions you make are guided by these values. When you know what they are, you will have better clarity and can more easily live up to your own expectations. Also, you will be able to make better choices in picking a partner or employees when you have them take an assessment.
